Dumpster rental software for Austin haulers

Austin licenses haulers, bonds dumpsters in the right-of-way, and makes big jobs prove their recycling. Most of that comes back to tonnage. Here is what the city publishes and how to keep up with it.

Putting a dumpster on the street in Austin

Where to apply
The AB+C Portal. Transportation & Public Works, Right-of-Way Management, issues the permit.[1]
Dumpster in the right-of-way

TURP
The Temporary Use of ROW Permit is $550 plus daily area fees. The city does not say if a single dumpster needs one. Fees change each October 1.[3]

Not published. Ask Right-of-Way Management when you apply.
Hauler license
A Private Waste Hauler License under City Code 15-6, Article 3. Renew January 1–31 with a tonnage report. Each vehicle needs a current Texas inspection.[4]
C&D recycling
Projects with 5,000 sq ft or more of new, added, or remodeled floor area, and all commercial and multifamily demolitions, must divert 50% or landfill under 2.5 lb per sq ft.[5]

City rules are from October 2026, from Austin TPW: Right-of-Way Management and 6 other sources. Rules and fees change, so confirm with the city before you place a can in the street.

January is paperwork month

The hauler license renews in a 31-day window, and the tonnage report goes in with it. If tickets sit in a truck door pocket all year, that report takes a weekend. Drivers in DumpTracker log the ticket number, net tons, destination, and a photo at the scale, so the year's numbers are already on the projects.

The 50% rule reaches the hauler

Contractors on covered jobs have to show their diversion, and the city says haulers and facilities supply the tonnage data. The hauler who can hand over clean tickets per project gets the next call. Permits and tickets are on the Pro and Elite plans.

Where C&D goes

Local news reported in 2025 that Texas Disposal Systems in Creedmoor is the city's only qualified processor for major C&D projects. As of a 2023 KUT report, the WM Austin Community Landfill had an estimated 2 to 4 years of life left. Call ahead before you count on it.

Where DumpTracker fits in Austin

The rules don't change because you have software. Keeping track of them does.

Permits on the job, with a warning

Log the permit number, who issued it, and the start and end dates on the project. If the permit ends before the scheduled pickup, the project tells you before the city does.

  • Dump tickets and permits are on Pro and Elite.

Austin questions

Do I need a permit to put a dumpster on the street in Austin?

Yes. Apply in the AB+C Portal with Right-of-Way Management. A dumpster permit needs insurance and a $10,000 bond. Containers on a parking permit need two spaces, Type III barricades on both sides, and at least 3 business days' notice. Vendors say private property needs no permit, but we found no city text on it.

Who needs a Private Waste Hauler License in Austin?

Anyone who collects, removes, or transports waste, recycling, or compost in the city. Renew from January 1 to 31 each year and submit a tonnage report.

Which Austin projects fall under the C&D recycling ordinance?

Projects with 5,000 sq ft or more of new, added, or remodeled floor area, and every commercial or multifamily demolition. They must divert 50% of debris or landfill less than 2.5 lb per sq ft.

Can DumpTracker help with Austin's tonnage reporting?

It keeps the raw numbers. Each dump ticket on a project has its ticket number, net tons, destination, and a photo. DumpTracker does not file the city report or send invoices.
